Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor to include fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
