World Health Organization Raises Alert Over Acute Scarcity of Weight-Loss Jabs

Less than one in 10 people that would benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, states the WHO as it publishes its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Considering over a billion people worldwide now living with obesity, it is urging increased and just access to this class of drugs.

Based on projections, over two billion are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong care," said its chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, limited production capacity, and distribution challenges are significant hurdles to universal access to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing considerable weight, explains the body.

Even under the present most favorable outlook, the supply of such drugs would only suffice for about 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, according to the health organization.

The guideline calls on governments and firms to expand availability, by strategies such as voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the core component of a leading brand – is due to expire in a number of nations in 2026.
